‘Zits’ growths are popping up on Maine potatoes

Newly harvested potatoes in Maine are popping out of the bottom with skins trying like they’ve a case of teenage zits.

Like raised pimples on human pores and skin, white bumps on potatoes develop out of pores — referred to as lenticels on greens — on the tubers’ pores and skin. Relying on the variability, they’re extra evident on some spuds than others.

The unpleasant growths are simply the newest signal of how moist this summer season has been. Crop consultants say these bumps — also called “water spots” or “water scabs” — are completely pure when circumstances are as damp as they’ve been.
