College students from a traditionally Black med faculty are delivering care throughout rural Maine

Within the two weeks she’s been working on the Cutler Well being Middle on the College of Maine’s Orono campus, doctor assistant pupil Katie Bandstra has seen at the least 55 sufferers.

“It’s mid-October, so we’re getting the flu season,” Bandstra mentioned. “So a variety of sufferers have are available in with acute respiratory viral diseases.”

Bandstra and classmate Maddie Vinet are second-year college students on the Morehouse College of Drugs, a traditionally Black medical faculty in Atlanta, Georgia. They’re each in Maine beneath a brand new pilot program between the medical faculty and Northern Gentle Well being, Maine’s second largest well being care supplier.
